Health Insurance, MediShield & MediFund
Most insurance providers do not include depression as part of critical illnesses insurance coverage. However, you will be able to make claims for hospitalization and other charges, if you have medical expense insurance.
At this point, costs incurred in the treatment of depression are also outside the scope of MediShield or MediShield Plus and cannot be claimed. Claims may be made, however through MediFund.
Medifund is meant to be a help of last resort for patients who are unable to pay for their medical expenses. If you are receiving inpatient treatment in B2 or C Class wards or subsidised outpatient treatment in the public hospitals, you may apply for help from Medifund.
If you are in financial difficulties, you can approach the Medical Social Worker in the hospitals for assistance. The Medical social Worker manages various assistance schemes such as Medifund to help patients in financial difficulties pay their medical bills. They will assess your circumstances and recommend the appropriate financial assistance. Applications for Medifund can also be made through the Medical Social Worker.
